Best Hands Free Segway: Comparison Table

Many consumers buy products before they fully understand the specifications and what they are capable of. Read ahead to find out if a two-wheeled Electric scooter is right for you and compares and contrasts many of the most popular models so that you can make an informed decision.

What are the Benefits of Buying a Self-Balancing 2-Wheele Electric Scooter?

There are many options when it comes to travel. Cars are expensive and even with a traditional scooter like a Vespa, parking will still be an inconvenience. Bicycles are cheap, but riding them requires a lot of effort and if you are going somewhere public, you may not want to show up looking sweaty and exhausted. Bicycles and cars are also dangerous, causing millions of deaths and injuries every year. Are you looking for something else? Something that is a cheap and environmentally-friendly way to travel? Something that you can bring anywhere, store easily and that you can learn how to drive in a matter of minutes? You don’t need to look further than a self-balancing scooter. Described as “insanely fun”, self-balancing two-wheeled scooters are great for running errands, since they can handle all kinds of terrain, and travel much faster than walking. They also all run on zero-emissions batteries, making them even more eco-friendly than almost any other form of transportation out there. There is nothing to steer, leaving your hands free for carrying other items.

Plus, with all the balancing you’ll be doing to stay on top of the scooter, you’ll even get a workout. It’s so easy to learn how to use, even people who can’t ride a bike try and master the scooters within hours or even minutes.

Many celebrities have been singing the praises of these small vehicles, including Nick Jonas, David Ortiz, Kendall Jenner, Wiz Khalifa, Nicki Minaj and Chris Brown. Some Amazon reviewers said they felt like a celebrity as they cruised down the street. Many of you probably saw Jaime Foxx introducing Jimmy Fallon to these scooters on the Tonight Show. Justin Bieber posted several pictures of himself on his own model, creating a lot of excitement on Instagram.

Their enthusiasm for the products is justifiable. Sales of self-balancing electric scooters have been skyrocketing over the past couple years, as the technology has greatly improved and everyone has realized just how convenient and how much fun they are.

Most weight 27 pounds or less, making them exceptionally easy to store and carry. They take approximately 2-3 hours to charge, and can travel 8-12 miles per charge, depending on the model. Maximum speeds start at 6.2 mph while others can reach up to 10 mph.

The self-balancing scooters can carry 200-300 pounds, making them ideal for running errands. It’s easy to carry groceries. People who ride self-balancing scooters claim that the experience is completely different from riding a traditional, motorcycle-like scooter, and many prefer it.

Even if you don’t want to stop driving an actual car to run errands, a self-balancing scooter is extremely fun. Since they are also safe for kids, it makes them a perfect birthday or Christmas present. Don’t be surprised if it becomes the center of attention when one of these gets unwrapped at a birthday party. Hopefully, the recipient will be too excited to get jealous.

Also, do you have a dog? With a self-balancing electric scooter that can travel much faster than walking speed, your dog will get tired out faster, and it will inject some novelty into what can sometimes be a boring routine. Your canine pal will love how fast you’ll be able to go.

Or, maybe you’re a college student. If you go to school at a large campus, it can be difficult when your back-to-back classes are on opposite sides of each other. Avid snowboarding enthusiasts also may want to consider a scooter as a way to satisfy board cravings during the off-season.

They’re just as fun and safe to ride at night, too, since nearly all models come with LED lights in the back.

How do Self-Balancing 2-Wheeled Scooters Work?

When they are being ridden, the person on top looks like they are riding a skateboard, but sideways. A gyroscope balances the rider, so a handle is unnecessary. There are two sensors under each foot pad respond to even the slightest pressure from the rider to make turns and change directions. The sensors detect when your feet make micro-movements, and it transmits that information to two separate motors.

At first, it is a little intimidating to ride one, but after just a few minutes of practice it will be easy and a lot of fun.

It may seem like they would be hard to start and stop, but they respond to the user and do not just operate off of an on/off switch or anything like that. To start moving, lean forward, and to stop, simply stand up straight. To turn, apply a little bit of pressure to the pad on the side in the direction you want to go. You can even move backwards if you lean slightly in that direction.

Even if you get the machine off-balance by leaning forward when you don’t mean to, you won’t just fall over. The scooter will stop once the rider steps off, so there is no danger that the mini segway will simply run out of control.

The design works in a way similar to your own inner ear. Whenever your body gets off-balance, fluid in the inner ear shifts to signal the brain that an adjustment needs to be made. Similarly, when the scooter is off-balance, the gyroscope inside it redistributes the weight to prevent falling.

Another critical safety feature is the two electronic controller circuit boards that are made up of microprocessors. The circuit boards are made up of many different microprocessors so that if any of them fail, the others can compensate for the loss. For instance, Segway scooters have 10 microprocessors in their models, and will notify the user if any of them fail.

With adult supervision, it’s also a great small motor for children. Since they do not travel that fast and prevent injury, they are ideal motorized toys for younger consumers.

The scooters are also extremely tough and durable, with ABS plastic housing that resists scratches and abrasions. Also included are hardy bump rubbers that act like shock absorbers to protect it from the rugged outdoors.

One of the most innovative things about self-balancing segways is that their wheels are oriented to the side. That way, it is easy to stand and balance even when the scooter is not in motion. This makes it ideal for navigating areas with lots of pedestrians or stop lights, since you may need to stop and get off often.

Is a Self-Balancing 2-Wheeled Scooter Right for Me?

Are you an adventurous person? Are you a busy person who is sick of searching for a place to park your car when travelling the traditional way? Maybe you are an independent person who prefers to find their own path through life, or you are an environmentalist looking to reduce carbon emissions with cutting-edge technology. Maybe you are simply a trendsetter who wants to stay up-to-date with the latest gadgets.

Their big wheels can handle smooth surfaces like carpet, asphalt, and concrete. They can also travel over dry dirt, but it is typically not recommended that you drive them on the grass.

What Are the Top Rated Hands Free Segway Available on the Market?

The IO Hawk

io hawk self balane electric scooterThe IO Hawk is one of the most famous models of 2-wheeled self-balancing scooters. However, it is also the most expensive, at $1,799. Since most models are essentially the same, it may be best to find a cheaper model. The IO Hawk can handle sidewalk cracks of up to .50” seamlessly, and can also handle small splashes of water and dust. There are colored lights in the back while it is being operated, and the tires are non-pneumatic and hollow, which means they can climb hills that are at an angle of up to 15°. The battery is a 36V Lithium ion battery and is included in the price. The turning radius can be zero, which means that the scooter can make very tight turns. The IO Hawk is available in a wide variety of colors, including red, blue, white, black, gold, and lime green.

Customers who have purchased the IO Hawk, however, are typically disappointed. Not because the product doesn’t work, but because its price is so much higher even though most two-wheeled scooters have essentially the same specifications. Most customers describe the IO Hawk as a rip-off. However, if you want to stand out of the crowd and be the cool guy, you buy it from Amazon for $945. Please feel free to read my full review on IO Hawk.

With so many options, which one will you choose? Is speed your highest priority? In that case, you may want to go with the 10-inch Electric Scooter pad from AlienWheel or the RioRand for a more economical option that is still quick. If price is your sticking point, the Monorover and Erover are the best options. Maybe color is the most important factor for you, in which case you are in luck. Since all self-balancing electric scooters have nearly identical designs, it makes sense to just pick the one you like best.
